Crinum asiaticum 'Purpureum'

Crinum asiaticum 'Purpureum'

This gutsy giant crinum bulb is packed full of purple plant power. Once planted in a warm position, the Crinum asiaticum 'Purpureum' bulb bursts into action like a great big plant-filled party popper, albeit one you’ll watch 'pop' slowly! Over the course of season, luscious strap-shaped bronze-purple leaves form a fountain shape of foliage, later joined by big clusters of wispy, sweet-scented blooms. If you crave growing something a bit different this season, this impressive bulb is the perfect fix.

Crinum asiaticum 'Purpureum' (or Giant Crinum or Grand Crinum Lily) is adapted to warmer climates so we recommend giving it a bit of additional warmth to get it started. Potting it up indoors or in a warm greenhouse will do the trick, and once it’s woken up (and after risk of frost has passed) it can be moved or planted outside in a sheltered position.

This bulb needs plenty of sun to perform at its best. Plant it with the top slightly exposed and water when the soil starts to feel dry. Plant in a large pot so it can be moved under cover for winter, or if you have mild winters it will be happy with a thick mulch over it over winter.
