Ornithogalum oligophyllum

Ornithogalum oligophyllum

Known as the Dwarf Star of Bethlehem, this is a rare but very hardy yet pretty little bulbous perennial. In late winter it produces channelled, mid-green leaves to 10cm long. Ornithogalum oligophyllum are quickly followed by upright flower stalks, carrying an open cluster of starry flowers. Opening from green buds, these flowers are white to ivory-white, with a lighter edge, and a yellow-green stripe on the outside. It will grow well in part-shade, but is even better in full sun.Ā

The blooms of Ornithogalum oligophyllum, which are around 2-3cm across, often start to open when they are still close to the ground. Originally from Turkey, the Balkans and Georgia, this tough little plant will withstand intense winter cold, but it dislikes a permanently moist soil. For both of these reasons, many people like to grow it in elevated positions, such as raised beds or rockeries, or in pots for close-up enjoyment.
